Tyrone Mings was one of the Aston Villa heroes at Club Brugge last night, his incredible clearance completing the “unfinished business” from his side’s visit to Belgium earlier in the season.

Villa lost 1-0 at the Jan Breydelstadion in the Champions League group phase in November with Mings giving away the match-winning penalty after a catastrophic mix-up with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

But he was outstanding on their return to Bruges as Villa won the first leg of their round of 16 playoff 3-1.

Incredible clearance from Mings sets Villa up for late win

He excelled in particular with one second-half clearance that somehow prevented a header from Hans Vanaken finding the corner with the game delicately poised at 1-1.

Mings said: “I was more than happy to come back here and play in this stadium again because I think we had unfinished business.

“I am very proud of what we have done tonight. I really enjoyed this game. We played against them [in the league phase] and knew a bit of what to expect.

“The game was exactly as we anticipated. We can be proud of both our defensive and attacking play.”

Mings was also effective at the other end with a header that enabled Leon Bailey to give Villa an early lead.

Maxim De Cuyper levelled but a late own goal from Brandon Mechele and a Marco Asensio penalty handed Unai Emery’s men a strong advantage to take back to Birmingham for the return game next week.

Emery hails marvellous Mings

The Villa boss singled Mings out for praise afterwards, saying: “The first experience he had here was not good.

“Today, he reacted fantastic, playing focused and serious, saving one action which would have been a goal. We are demanding inside. Every player has to be demanding with themselves.

“I know the difficulties of football and how we can get experiences and get better, this is my only target with the players.

“We corrected some things from the match we played here [in November]. Of course, we have to correct some things that didn’t work well today for the next match against Brugge.”
