Reliable journalist Joe Crann has dropped a worrying Sheffield Wednesday injury update out of Hillsborough, saying it “doesn’t look good”.

Sheffield Wednesday beaten in tight derby

The Owls were hoping to keep their Championship playoff hopes alive on Sunday afternoon, as they hosted promotion-chasing Sheffield United in a huge game for both sides.

A tight match was decided by a Rhian Brewster goal in the second half, however, with the former Liverpool striker inflicting a second 1-0 defeat on Wednesday by United this season, following the same scoreline at Bramall Lane earlier in the campaign.

Danny Rohl’s side now look increasingly unlikely to book a place in the playoffs come May, with a six-point gap now opening up between themselves and sixth-place West Brom. There are also five other teams ahead of them in the table before they even get to the Baggies, so only a near-perfect run of form in their final eight matches will give them a chance.

While the Owls’ defeat was bitterly disappointing, the result wasn’t the only negative aspect of the day, with Max Lowe suffering a knee injury against his former club, seeing him replaced after 39 minutes. Now, a big update has emerged regarding the left-back.

Sheffield Wednesday suffer injury blow

Writing on X on Monday, Crann reacted to news that there is worry about the injury suffered to Sheffield Wednesday defender Lowe on Sunday: “This doesn’t sound good for Max Lowe. Hopefully there’s good news once he’s been assessed.”

The Star went into further depth about the situation Crann has heard out of Hillsborough, sharing Rohl’s comments on the injury:

“When a player goes out and says he has something on his knee. When we look back to the season it could be another again. I don’t know at the moment. It could be that we once again get one back and the other is out. It could be the story of our season.”

Sheffield Wednesday defender Max Lowe

Not having Lowe for the rest of the season, or at least a big chunk of it, would be an undoubted blow for Wednesday, given what a solid performer he has been since arriving last summer.

The Englishman has started 31 league games in 2024/25 to date, averaging 4.1 clearances and 2.4 tackles per game, and Rohl knew he was an astute signing after the 4-0 win at home to Plymouth Argyle on the opening weekend back in August, saying:

“It was a team performance, but you saw today why we signed the players that we did. We had the idea of what we had to improve on last season. It was a little bit the feedback from my side and the analysis of which players and profiles we need. You see now both full-back positions, we are strong in both directions.”

Hopefully, Lowe is back as soon as possible, playing a part between now and May, but as Crann alludes to, it feels like a worrying setback currently.
