Goalkeeper Andre Onana endured a horror show as Manchester United were consigned to a 3-2 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Ruben Amorim’s tenure as Manchester United head coach was ignited with a goal from Marcus Rashford inside the opening minute-and-a-half of the trip to Ipswich Town. Nottingham Forest only needed 91 seconds to take the lead at Old Trafford, as Nikola Milenkovic butted a powerful header beyond Onana at the game’s first corner.

The Red Devils were not rocked for long, soon stroking the ball around with an air of confidence and composure which hasn’t been overly evident during Amorim’s brief reign. In an almost surgical passing sequence, United sliced through their visitors, teeing Alejandro Garnacho up for a shot which was parried to the feet of a grateful Rasmus Hojlund, who tapped United level in the 18th minute. That control evaporated during the interval.

Forest started the second half almost as quickly as the opening 45 minutes. Pouncing upon a stray pass from Bruno Fernandes, Morgan Gibbs-White lashed a shot from the top of the D. Onana was bamboozled by the effort which didn’t so much swerve as gentle sway right down the middle of the goal, watching on helplessly as ball trickled past him two minutes after the restart.

United’s wobbling number one was left befuddled once more soon after. Chris Wood sent a looping header over Onana and a gaggle of red shirts lined up underneath the crossbar, giving Forest a 3-1 lead in bizarre circumstances.

Fernandes halved the deficit shortly after the hour mark, starting a finishing a swift forward thrust with a crisp curler into the top corner, but couldn’t inspire a famous fightback.
