Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk still in the dark over next season’s plans

Virgil van Dijk insists he remains in the dark over his Liverpool future and says anyone who claims to have insider knowledge of his plans for next season is “lying to your face”.

Reds skipper Van Dijk is out of contract in June alongside other key men Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

The Times claims Alexander-Arnold has an offer to join Real Madrid but Van Dijk and Salah remain in limbo.

And the 33-year-old Dutchman, who has been pivotal in Liverpool’s excellent season which seems likely to culminate in Premier League glory, admits he has no idea what is going to happen come the summer.

I have no idea – Van Dijk

Speaking after last night’s penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16, he told The Times: “I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely, I have no idea at the moment.

“It is not on hold. Nothing on hold. There’s just…I keep saying the same thing.

“Listen, there are 10 games to go, and that is my full focus. If there is news, you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it.

“At the moment, I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.”

Two big prizes still the target for Liverpool – Van Dijk

Defeat to PSG was a crushing blow for Liverpool but they are still in with an excellent chance of landing a Premier League and EFL Cup double.

They are 15 points clear at the summit of England’s top flight and face Newcastle at Wembley on Sunday bidding to retain the EFL Cup trophy they won under Jurgen Klopp last season.

“There are 10 games left, not many, and there are two big prizes we can still get,” Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018, added. 

“We are going to give it everything. We have to feel the disappointment of [PSG] but from now it is about recovery.

“If we bring this intensity in Wembley with our fans, then I am positive. I am always positive. But I am really looking forward to being back out there.

“We don’t need any added motivation. We have 10 games. The EFL Cup final on Sunday – if you need any added motivation you are in the wrong business.

“All of the fans want to celebrate [winning] it. But it will be difficult. Any final is difficult. I am really looking forward to it.

“We are out of the [the Champions League] competition. That is normal, human. Recover and be fully focused on Sunday. That is our job, we need our fans to be there for us.”
