The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) confirmed Sandro Eric Sosing remains in hospital after he withdrew from his World Darts Championship match due to chest pains.
Sosing was due to play against Ian White in the first round on Friday.
However, the PDC state the Filipino star ‘reported numbness and muscle pains’ while practicing and was attended to by medical staff.
Sosing left the Alexandra Palace and was taken to a nearby hospital to undergo further testing.
The PDC have since provided an update on Sosing’s health.
“He has subsequently undergone neurological assessment and been diagnosed with having GBS Guillain-Barre syndrome,” the PDC statement read.
“He remains under medical care in hospital but hopes to be able to travel home soon.
“Sandro would like to thank everyone who has enquired after his wellbeing for their well wishes and kind messages.”
According to the NHS, Guillan-Barre syndrome is ‘a rare condition that affects the nerves’ and requires ‘urgent treatment in hospital’.
The condition is known to affect an individual’s breathing and heartbeat, with symptoms often getting worse in the first two to four weeks.
Due to Sosing’s withdrawal, White received a bye to play European Championship winner Ritchie Edhouse in the second round.
White emerged the victor with a 3-1 win to move into the third round.
Sosing was due to make his second appearance at the World Darts Championship having qualified through the PDC Asian Championship.
He went down to fellow countryman Lourence Ilagan 7-3 in the final but picked up £5,500 and a spot in darts’ showpiece event for his troubles.
It was also Sosing’s second consecutive final at the same event, cementing his status as one of the biggest rising stars on the Asian circuit.
Sosing, ranked 225th in the world, also recorded his first PDC Asian Tour title at Kyoto in March.
Earlier in Friday’s afternoon session, the Netherlands’ Alexander Merkx beat Stephen Burton 3-0.
Merkx, who is also a caravan salesman in his home nation, threw four 180s and will now face 15th seed Chris Dobey in the second round.
The second game in the afternoon slot provided much more drama as Wessel Nijman held off Cameron Carolissen.
Nijman raced out to a 2-0 lead, but South African star Carolissen roared back and levelled the contest.
Carolissen even held a 2-1 lead in the final set but wobbled in the decisive leg, allowing Nijman to close out victory.
Nijman evidently felt the pressure as he let out an emotional roar of delight after his final checkout of 25 to book a spot in the second round against No. 23 seed Joe Cullen.
The Dutchman and Carolissen combined for 13 180s, as the pair averaged 94.83 and 95.9 respectively.
Pop superstar Ed Sheeran was in attendance for Nijman and Carolissen’s thriller as he soaked in the contest from the hospitality section.
Sheeran, who owns a minority stake in Premier League side Ipswich Town, thoroughly enjoyed himself and happily played up to the crowd when they chanted for him to down a pint.
The four-time Grammy winner also played along with the Ally Pally’s brutal heckle, where they sang ‘Ipswich get battered, everywhere they go’.
