As nights go, it couldn’t have gone much worse for America’s golden couple – Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.

Kelce was a peripheral figure as the Kansas City Chiefs were blown away by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 while watching girlfriend Taylor Swift was given a rough reception by the New Orleans crowd.

The Chiefs came in looking to secure an historic three-peat but they never got going with the Eagles defense getting to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, whose counterpart Jalen Hurts was ruthlessly efficient in every element of the game.

The Eagles won 40-22 with Kelce managing just four catches for 39 yards in what could be the final game of his career.

Aged 35 and after a disappointing year by his own standards, Kelce has a decision to make heading into the offseason.

First, he will have to process the trauma of a defeat that was more emphatic than the final scoreline suggests. The Eagles led 40-6 midway through the final quarter with two late Chiefs touchdowns giving the result an air of respectability.

Kelce hails brilliant Eagles

Kelce said in the locker room: “Hats off to the Eagles, man. They got after us. All three phases.

“Couldn’t get it going offensively. I mean, they just got after us on all three phases and then on top of that, turnovers, penalties, playing behind the sticks on offense, dropped passes, not taking advantage of the play call and executing them, there’s a lot that goes into it.

“You don’t lose like that without everything going bad.”

The Chiefs compiled a 15-2 regular season record but never hit top gear, often snatching wins deep into games. But Kelce admitted yesterday was a new low.

He added: “We haven’t played that bad all year.

“We just couldn’t find that spark. We couldn’t find that momentum.”

Mahomes hopes Kelce plays on, but won’t influence him either way

If that was Kelce’s final game of a wonderful NFL career it would be a sad way to go out.

Mahomes hopes his team-mate sticks around but says he wouldn’t pressurize him either way.

He said: “I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own. He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL and been such a joy, not only for me to work with but for people to watch. He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. He’s done enough to be a gold jacket guy and a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

Trump revels in Swift boos

Team Kelce/Swift suffered as much off the field as on it.

Swift may be the most popular pop star in the world but there was not much love for the 14-time Grammy Award winner inside the Superdome. Swift was booed when her face popped up on the jumbotron, much to the delight of nemesis Donald Trump.

Swift has routinely voiced her dislike for Trump, who became the first sitting president of the USA to attend a Super Bowl.

Afterwards, Trump took to social media platform Truth Social to remark: “She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”

Trump watched three quarters before departing. He got to watch Kendrick Lamar performing the half-time show before he headed back to Washington.
